DONCASTER'S CHANCE TO PROVE IT IS BEST BAR NONE 2006 sees Doncaster become the first Town in South Yorkshire to adopt the exciting Best Bar None awards scheme. The UK-wide scheme, which is backed by the Home Office was piloted in Manchester in 2003 and has since been adopted by over thirty other Towns and Cities with great success. Best Bar None is aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol-licensed premises with the ultimate intention of offering and maintaining a safer, more welcoming, attractive and lively drinking experience. The Best Bar None scheme is an integral element in a two-year Doncaster Evening Economy Partnership project, which aims to reduce alcohol related crime and harm, raise peoples perceptions of Doncaster and attract a more diverse customer base. Other aspects of the project include, operation Alligator – a high profile police initiative, which is identifying and defusing potential problems early and thus further reducing the actual instances of drink related crime, the introduction of late night buses and an upgrade of the Towns CCTV and lighting. Best Bar None aims to reward licensees who provide good management, a safe and enjoyable environment for customers, discourage binge drinking and prevent alcohol-related crime. It will encourage licensees to act responsibly and take pride in their premises and surroundings and, in doing so, put something back into the Town and their local community. The rewards for licensees include, the prestige of being part of the awards scheme, increased business within the area and lower insurance premiums resulting from the fact that they are running safer establishments. Andy Steele from the Railway Hotel on West Street and also Chairman of Doncasters Pubwatch said “The Pubwatch members think that this is an excellent way for their hard work in making Doncaster a safer night out to be recognised” There is no doubt that this will be a big hit with Doncasters licensees and the public as a whole, as has proved to be the case countrywide. The official launch of the Doncaster scheme will be on Tuesday 5th September 2006 at 12 noon in Le Bistro restaurant, East Laith Gate, where applications for this years awards will become available to all licensed premises located within the Town Centre. All successful applicants will receive accreditation at the Awards Ceremony to be held in early 2007. The scheme will ultimately reward the very best bar, pub or club in the Town Centre judged to be “Best Bar None 2006”. Further award categories will include a Hallam FM listener’s award and a Doncaster Free Press reader’s award.
