Manana Manana, the 2007 Best Bar and overall winner of Doncaster Best Bar None was the venue of choice for licensees from throughout Doncaster at the Champagne launch of the 2008 awards on Tuesday 2nd September.
Licensees and guests were given the opportunity to find out about the successes and achievements of Best Bar None over the past year and also about the plans for the future.
Best Bar None was launched in Doncaster in 2006 and has resulted in many Town Centre venues gaining accreditation from the scheme, which focuses on the safe and responsible management of licensed premises, with the ultimate intention of offering and maintaining a safer, more welcoming, attractive and lively town.
Following the success over the last two years of the Town Centre based project Doncaster Council through the Safer Doncaster Partnership are rolling out the scheme borough wide.
Representatives of Pubwatch schemes from across the borough were amongst the guests who enjoyed a Champagne lunch courtesy of sponsors John Smiths.
Speakers at the event included Superintendent Ged Gamble who said, “Best Bar None has developed partnership working between licensees, the Police and Doncaster Council. This improved level of working has helped to ensure the safety of people in Doncaster and contributed to a dramatic fall in violent crime.”
Doncaster's Deputy Mayor, Coun Stuart Exelby, said: We want Doncaster to be the venue of choice for people to have an enjoyable and safe night out. The Best Bar None scheme helps everyone involved in serving customers to achieve this.
Those establishments taking part are a credit to the borough and it is right they should be recognised through these awards.
Denise Thomson deputy director of BII, the professional body for the licensed trade said, We appreciate how important training and qualifications has been to the Best Bar None scheme here in Doncaster, which is at the forefront of delivering focused and affordable training to licensees.
Best Bar None has provided 11 training courses, which have helped 220 managers, staff and licensing officers to deliver an enhanced service to customers. Two more courses are planned for October and November in conjunction with Atteys solicitors, the emphasis of which will be first aid and security.
All of the above coupled with the hard work being carried out by the licensees and Pubwatch have helped to ensure that Doncaster is not only the best night out in South Yorkshire but also the safest.
